Where to Stay in Railay Beach, Thailand: Best Areas & Hotels

If I’m being completely honest, Railay Beach has been my absolute favourite place we’ve visited on our trip so far. And yes, I know I say that about almost every new place we visit… but this time I genuinely mean it. 😂

Railay was honestly breathtaking. From the towering limestone cliffs and crystal-clear water to the soft sandy beaches, it felt like something straight out of a postcard. And being able to wake up every morning and walk straight onto the beach honestly felt like a dream come true.

If you’re planning a trip to Railay Beach and wondering where to stay, I’ve put together this guide covering the best areas and hotels, so you can find the perfect place to stay for your trip.

Where to Stay in Railay Beach, Thailand

Choosing where to stay in Railay Beach can make a big difference to your experience. Although Railay is small and easy enough to explore on foot, each area has a slightly different feel, from the beautiful beachfront of Railay West to the quieter, more budget-friendly side of Railay East.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a luxury resort, somewhere affordable or a laid-back backpacker vibe, there’s an area of Railay that will suit you.

Railay West – Best for Beach Lovers

Railay West is where you’ll find the iconic Railay Beach, with its soft white sand, turquoise water and dramatic limestone cliffs surrounding the bay. It’s easily the most picturesque part of Railay and, in my opinion, the best area to stay if being close to the beach is your priority.

You’ll also find plenty of restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance, making it a really convenient base for exploring Railay. And if you’re lucky enough to have accommodation close to the beach, there’s nothing quite like waking up and being able to walk straight onto the sand.

Best for: First-time visitors, beach lovers, couples and anyone wanting the classic Railay Beach experience.

Railay East – Best for Budget-Friendly Stays

Railay East has a completely different feel from Railay West. Rather than a traditional swimming beach, this side of Railay is surrounded by mangroves, but it’s still within easy walking distance of Railay West and Phra Nang Beach.

One of the biggest advantages of staying here is that accommodation and restaurants can often be a little cheaper. It’s a great option if you want to experience Railay without paying a premium for a beachfront location.

Best for: Budget travellers, backpackers and anyone who doesn’t mind being a short walk from the beach.

Phra Nang Beach – Best for a Luxury Escape

Phra Nang Beach is arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in the area, surrounded by huge limestone cliffs and crystal-clear water. It’s also home to some of Railay’s more luxurious accommodation, making it a great choice if you’re looking for a special or romantic stay.

The area is a little quieter than Railay West, so it’s perfect if your idea of a trip to Railay involves relaxing somewhere beautiful and enjoying a more peaceful atmosphere.

Best for: Couples, honeymooners and travellers looking for a luxury stay.

Tonsai Beach – Best for Backpackers & Climbers

Tonsai Beach is the place to head if you’re looking for a more laid-back, adventurous atmosphere. It’s particularly popular with rock climbers thanks to the incredible limestone cliffs surrounding the area, and you’ll find a more backpacker-friendly vibe here.

Accommodation tends to be more basic and affordable, making Tonsai a good choice if you’re travelling on a budget and would rather spend your money exploring than on a fancy hotel.

Best for: Backpackers, climbers, solo travellers and adventurous travellers.

Our Stay at Avatar Railay

We stayed at Avatar Railay during our time in Railay Beach, and honestly, we couldn’t have been happier with our choice. It had that super luxurious, adults-only feel that made the whole stay feel much more special, but somehow we only paid £23 per night thanks to visiting during low season!

For us, it was the perfect combination of feeling like we were staying somewhere really special without having to spend a fortune. After a day exploring Railay, coming back to the hotel felt like our own little escape, and the whole experience was even better knowing just how little we had paid for it.

If you’re looking for a stay that feels a little more luxurious without the luxury price tag, Avatar Railay is definitely one I’d recommend checking out.

Avatar Railay-Adults Only – Our Pick

And finally, the hotel we stayed at ourselves: Avatar Railay. This was honestly one of the best accommodation finds of our trip. It had that luxurious, adults-only feel, complete with a pool and stylish rooms, but we paid just £23 per night because we were visiting during low season.

Booking.com currently rates Avatar at 9.0/10, with its location scoring 9.3/10. It’s technically on Railay East, but we found it incredibly easy to walk to Railay West, the restaurants and the other beaches. (Booking.com)

Tips for Booking Accommodation in Railay Beach

Before booking your hotel in Railay Beach, there are a few things worth knowing. Railay is a little different from other beach destinations in Thailand, so choosing your accommodation isn’t just about finding the nicest-looking hotel.

Consider Which Side of Railay You Want to Stay On

The biggest decision is whether you want to stay on Railay West, Railay East, Phra Nang or Tonsai. Railay is small enough to walk between the main areas, but where you stay will affect the atmosphere, views and how close you are to the beach.

If being able to walk straight onto the sand is your priority, look at Railay West. If you’re looking for better value, Railay East can be a great option — and you can easily walk across to Railay West during the day.

Remember That Railay Is Boat-Only

One of the things that makes Railay so special is also something to consider when booking your accommodation: there are no roads connecting Railay to the mainland. You’ll need to arrive by longtail boat and then continue on foot.

This means you should check where your hotel is located before booking and, if you have large luggage, check with the hotel about the easiest arrival point. Depending on the route and tide, you may need to walk through shallow water when getting off the boat, so sandals and a waterproof bag for anything valuable are a good idea.

Book Early During Peak Season

Railay has a relatively limited amount of accommodation compared with larger destinations such as Ao Nang, so the best-value hotels can book up quickly during the busiest months.

If you’re travelling during peak season, particularly around Christmas and New Year, I’d recommend booking as early as possible. If you’re travelling in low season, you’ll generally have more flexibility — and this is where you can find some seriously good deals.

We visited during low season and managed to stay at Avatar Railay for just £23 per night, which was incredible value for how luxurious the hotel felt.

Don’t Automatically Choose the Most Expensive Hotel

One of my biggest tips would be not to assume you need to spend a fortune to have an amazing stay in Railay.

There are some incredible luxury resorts here, but there are also some really good mid-range options that give you a beautiful pool, comfortable rooms and a great location for considerably less.

If you’re travelling on a budget, I’d compare a few different hotels across Railay West and East before booking. Sometimes paying slightly less and walking five or ten minutes to the beach can save you a lot of money.

Check the Exact Location Before Booking

Because Railay is so compact, it’s easy to look at a hotel on a booking website and assume everything is within seconds of the beach. While most places are walkable, the experience can be quite different depending on where you stay.

Look at the hotel’s position on the map and check how far it is from Railay West, Phra Nang Beach, restaurants and the nearest boat arrival point.

If you’re staying for several nights, I’d personally prioritise location over having every possible hotel facility — Railay itself is the reason you’re there!

Take Advantage of Low-Season Prices

If your dates are flexible, definitely check accommodation prices during low season. You can sometimes get significantly better value than you would during the busiest months.

For us, this made Railay feel like an absolute luxury escape without the luxury price tag. Avatar Railay felt like a high-end adults-only getaway, yet we paid just £23 a night.

Just remember that low season can also mean more unpredictable weather and rougher sea conditions, so check the forecast and boat situation around your travel dates.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Railay Beach?

I’d recommend staying for at least 2–3 nights if you can. While you can visit Railay as a day trip from Ao Nang, staying overnight lets you experience a completely different side of the destination once many of the day-trippers have left.

You’ll have time to explore Railay West, Railay East and Phra Nang Beach without rushing, enjoy the sunsets and actually make the most of having this incredible scenery right outside your hotel.
