We found ourselves in Kyoto during the famous Gion Matsuri Festival completely by chance. With very little prior planning, we had to do some last-minute research to make the most of one of Japan’s most iconic festivals.

What Is the Gion Matsuri Festival?
The Gion Matsuri Festival is one of Japan’s most famous and historic festivals, taking place every July in Kyoto. Dating back over 1,000 years, the festival was originally established to pray for protection from disease and disasters. Today, it has become one of Kyoto’s biggest annual celebrations and attracts visitors from across Japan and around the world.
The festival is centred around the Yasaka Shrine and is best known for its spectacular yamaboko floats, traditional music, cultural events and lively celebrations throughout Kyoto. The main highlights are the Saki Matsuri parade on 17 July and the Ato Matsuri parade on 24 July, when enormous, beautifully decorated floats make their way through the streets of central Kyoto.
Although the parades are the main events, Gion Matsuri is much more than a single day of celebrations. Throughout July, Kyoto comes alive with traditional ceremonies, evening street events, food stalls and opportunities to admire the incredible craftsmanship of the festival floats.
Visiting Kyoto during Gion Matsuri offers a unique opportunity to experience one of Japan’s most important cultural traditions. We were lucky enough to find ourselves in Kyoto during the festival completely by chance, and despite having to do some last-minute research, it quickly became one of the highlights of our time in the city.

Experience the Yoiyama Evening Celebrations
The Yoiyama evenings take place in the days leading up to the main float parades and are one of the best ways to experience the atmosphere of Gion Matsuri. The streets around central Kyoto become filled with beautifully decorated floats, traditional music, food stalls and crowds of people enjoying the festival atmosphere.
Many of the streets are closed to traffic, making it possible to walk between the different floats and explore the celebrations at your own pace. In the evening, the floats are illuminated by lanterns, creating a particularly magical atmosphere.
This was one of our favourite parts of the festival, as we could simply wander through the streets, admire the incredible floats and stop for some delicious festival food along the way.
Watch the Yamaboko Junko Float Parades
The famous Yamaboko Junko parades are the main events of the Gion Matsuri Festival. Huge, elaborately decorated floats are pulled through the streets of Kyoto, accompanied by traditional music and festival participants.
The Saki Matsuri parade takes place on 17 July, while the Ato Matsuri parade takes place on 24 July. The 17 July procession is generally the larger of the two, but both offer an incredible opportunity to see the traditional floats in action. (Kyoto Travel)
One of the most impressive moments is watching the floats navigate the corners of Kyoto’s streets. Some of the larger floats are unable to turn normally, so participants use bamboo poles placed beneath the wheels to help manoeuvre them around the streets.
Admire the Traditional Yamaboko Floats
The floats themselves are one of the biggest highlights of Gion Matsuri. Each one is beautifully decorated with intricate details, traditional textiles and artwork, and many have been carefully preserved and passed down through generations.
During the days leading up to the parades, you can often see the floats being assembled in the streets of Kyoto. This is a great opportunity to appreciate the incredible craftsmanship up close before they take part in the main procession.
Visit Yasaka Shrine
Yasaka Shrine is at the heart of the Gion Matsuri Festival and is closely connected to the festival’s history and religious traditions. Visiting the shrine is a great way to understand the cultural significance of the celebrations beyond the lively street events.

Enjoy the Food and Festival Atmosphere
No Japanese festival experience would be complete without trying some of the delicious food available from the many street stalls. During the busier festival evenings, you can find plenty of traditional Japanese snacks, drinks and sweet treats to enjoy as you explore.
For us, simply wandering through Kyoto’s streets, taking in the music, lanterns, traditional clothing and incredible atmosphere was one of the most memorable parts of experiencing the Gion Matsuri Festival.
How to Get Around Kyoto During Gion Matsuri
Getting around Kyoto during the Gion Matsuri Festival can be more challenging than usual, especially during the busiest events. With large crowds, road closures and packed public transport, it is important to plan your route in advance and allow extra time to get where you need to go.
Use Kyoto’s Public Transport Network
Kyoto’s trains and subway are generally one of the easiest ways to travel around the city during Gion Matsuri. The subway can be particularly useful for reaching areas around the festival while avoiding some of the road closures and crowds above ground.
Buses are also available, but they can be slower than usual during the festival due to increased traffic and temporary road closures.
Walk Between Festival Events
Many of the main Gion Matsuri celebrations take place relatively close to one another in central Kyoto. Walking is often the easiest way to move between events, particularly during the evening Yoiyama celebrations when some streets are closed to vehicles.
Walking also allows you to discover smaller festival displays, food stalls and beautifully decorated streets along the way.
Expect Road Closures and Crowded Streets
During the main festival events, roads around central Kyoto may be closed to traffic, particularly around the famous Yamaboko Junko parades. Taxis and buses may be unable to reach certain areas, so do not rely on being dropped directly at your destination.
If you are using a taxi, it is often best to get dropped off a short distance away from the main festival area and walk the rest of the way.
Plan Your Journey in Advance
One of the biggest lessons we learned from attending Gion Matsuri at the last minute was to check your route before leaving. Festival crowds can make even relatively short journeys take much longer than expected.
We recommend checking the latest transport information, allowing extra time and wearing comfortable shoes. If you are attending one of the main events, arriving early can also make getting around much easier.
Our top tip: During the busiest Gion Matsuri events, walking and using the subway are often the most reliable ways to get around Kyoto. Expect large crowds, be patient and avoid trying to travel directly through the busiest festival streets by bus or taxi.

Plan Ahead Where Possible
Although we managed to enjoy Gion Matsuri with last-minute research, planning ahead will make your experience much easier. Check the festival schedule before visiting and decide which events you most want to see.
The festival takes place across several weeks, so you do not necessarily need to visit during the busiest parade days to experience Gion Matsuri.
Arrive Early for the Main Events
If you are planning to watch one of the major Yamaboko Junko parades, arrive early to find a good viewing spot. The streets can become extremely crowded, and popular areas fill up quickly.
Arriving early also gives you more time to explore the surrounding streets before the main crowds arrive.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
You will likely be doing a lot of walking during Gion Matsuri. With road closures and large crowds, walking is often the easiest way to get between different festival areas.
Comfortable shoes are essential, especially if you plan to explore the Yoiyama evening celebrations.
Bring Water and Stay Hydrated
Kyoto can be extremely hot and humid during July, which is when the main Gion Matsuri celebrations take place. Make sure to bring water with you and take regular breaks when needed.
Convenience stores are also useful for picking up drinks and snacks throughout the day.
Expect Large Crowds
Gion Matsuri is one of Japan’s most famous festivals, so the busiest events can attract huge crowds. Be prepared for slow-moving streets, packed public transport and queues at popular food stalls.

July in Kyoto can be hot, humid and rainy. Checking the forecast before heading out can help you prepare for the day.
We recommend carrying a small umbrella or lightweight rain jacket, especially if rain is expected.
Book Your Accommodation Early
If you know you will be visiting Kyoto during the busiest Gion Matsuri celebrations, book your accommodation as early as possible. Hotels can become more expensive and availability may be limited during the festival period.
