Miyajima Island Day Trip: The Ultimate One-Day Itinerary for 2026

Miyajima Island was, for me, the personal highlight of our Japan trip! From relaxing on the beaches and riding the cable car to enjoying breathtaking mountaintop views, there is so much to see and do here. Add in the iconic floating shrine, wild deer roaming freely around the island, and winding streets filled with charming cafés and bars, and what is there not to love? Miyajima truly has something for everyone, making it one of the most unforgettable places we visited in Japan.

How to Get to Miyajima Island

Getting to Miyajima Island is relatively straightforward, especially if you are visiting from nearby Hiroshima. As the island is only accessible by boat, you will first need to travel to Miyajimaguchi, where you can catch a short ferry across to Miyajima.

Getting to Miyajimaguchi from Hiroshima

The easiest way to reach Miyajimaguchi from Hiroshima is by train. The JR Sanyo Line runs from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station, with the journey taking approximately 30 minutes.

Once you arrive at Miyajimaguchi Station, it is just a short walk to the ferry terminals.

Taking the Ferry to Miyajima Island

From Miyajimaguchi, you can choose between two main ferry companies that operate regular services to Miyajima Island. The ferry journey takes approximately 10 minutes and offers beautiful views as you approach the island.

The ferries run frequently throughout the day, making it easy to visit Miyajima as a day trip. We recommend checking the ferry schedule before travelling, particularly if you plan to arrive early or stay until later in the evening.

Top tip: If you are travelling with a JR Pass, check whether your ferry journey is covered before purchasing a separate ticket. The ferry crossing is short, but arriving early in the day is a great way to beat some of the crowds and make the most of your time on the island.

The Ultimate One-Day Miyajima Island Itinerary

Miyajima Island is the perfect destination for a day trip, and with a little planning, you can experience many of its top attractions in a single day. From exploring the iconic Itsukushima Shrine and wandering the island’s traditional streets to riding the cable car up Mount Misen, there is plenty to keep you busy.

We recommend starting your day early to make the most of your time on the island and to experience some of Miyajima’s most popular attractions before the largest crowds arrive. While this itinerary includes the main highlights, make sure to leave yourself plenty of time to wander and explore at your own pace. Some of our favourite moments on Miyajima came from simply strolling through the winding streets, watching the wild deer and stopping at the charming cafés and bars along the way.

Start Your Day at Itsukushima Shrine and the Floating Torii Gate

One of the first places we recommend visiting on Miyajima Island is the iconic Itsukushima Shrine and its famous floating torii gate. This is one of the main reasons many people visit the island, and seeing the bright orange gate standing in the water is truly an unforgettable experience.

The shrine itself is built over the water and is one of the most recognisable sights in Japan. As you explore the complex, take your time admiring the traditional architecture and peaceful surroundings. The view of the shrine and torii gate can change dramatically depending on the tide, so you may see the gate surrounded by water or, at low tide, be able to walk closer to it.

We recommend checking the tide times before your visit so you can plan your day around the experience you want. Personally, we loved seeing the iconic torii gate surrounded by water, which created the classic Miyajima view we had hoped to see.

Arriving earlier in the day is also a great way to explore Itsukushima Shrine before the island becomes busier. Once you have finished exploring the shrine, you can begin wandering through Miyajima’s charming streets and discovering more of the island’s highlights.

Wander Through Miyajima’s Traditional Streets

After visiting Itsukushima Shrine, take some time to simply wander through the traditional streets of Miyajima. This was one of our favourite things to do on the island, as there is so much to discover around every corner.

The narrow winding streets are filled with traditional Japanese buildings, small shops, local restaurants, cafés and bars. We loved taking our time exploring the area without following a strict route, stopping whenever something caught our attention.

The streets can become quite busy during the day, so exploring earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon can offer a more relaxed experience. Be sure to keep an eye out for the island’s famous wild deer as you wander, as they can often be found roaming through the streets and around the main attractions.

Don’t forget to try some of Miyajima’s local specialities along the way, including its famous oysters and sweet momiji manju. Wandering through these charming streets is the perfect way to experience a quieter and more traditional side of Miyajima Island.

Look Out for Miyajima’s Wild Deer

One of the things that makes Miyajima Island so special is the wild deer that roam freely around the island. As you wander through the traditional streets, around Itsukushima Shrine and along the waterfront, you will likely spot deer wandering between visitors and exploring the island.

Unlike the deer in Nara, Miyajima’s deer are not known for bowing for food, but they are still a wonderful part of the island’s unique atmosphere. We loved seeing them casually wandering around as we explored, making the experience feel even more special.

Keep your camera ready as you never know when you might spot one! Just remember to admire the deer from a respectful distance and avoid feeding them.

Take the Miyajima Ropeway to Mount Misen

Cable Car to Mount Misen

One of the highlights of our day on Miyajima Island was taking the Miyajima Ropeway up Mount Misen. After exploring the shrine and traditional streets, heading up into the mountains offers a completely different perspective of the island.

The ropeway journey takes you above the lush forested landscape, with beautiful views of Miyajima and the surrounding Seto Inland Sea along the way. The ride itself is an experience and makes reaching the summit much easier than hiking the entire way.

We recommend allowing plenty of time for the Mount Misen section of your itinerary. Once you reach the top of the ropeway, you can continue exploring the mountain and make your way towards the summit viewpoints for some of the most spectacular scenery on the island.

Top tip: If reaching the summit of Mount Misen is your main priority for the day, make sure you wear comfortable shoes and stock up on plenty of water before setting off. Although the cable car takes you most of the way up the mountain, there is still a walk to reach the summit and its incredible viewpoints. The walk can be more challenging than expected, especially on a warm day, so having comfortable footwear and plenty of water is essential.

Relax on Miyajima’s Beaches

While Miyajima is best known for its famous shrine, mountain views and traditional streets, the island also has some beautiful beaches where you can slow down and enjoy a more peaceful side of the island.

After exploring the main attractions, take some time to relax along the coastline and enjoy the views across the Seto Inland Sea. The beaches offer a welcome break from sightseeing and are a great place to sit, unwind and take in the island’s natural beauty.

If you are visiting during the warmer months, spending some time by the water can be a lovely way to escape the crowds and enjoy a quieter side of Miyajima. We loved that the island offered such a great mix of adventure, culture and nature, with the beaches providing the perfect opportunity to slow down during a busy day of exploring. Andy especially loved the opportunity to cool off in the sea.

Explore Miyajima’s Temples and Shrines

Beyond the famous Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima Island is home to plenty of other beautiful temples and shrines that are well worth exploring. As you wander around the island, keep an eye out for the smaller religious sites tucked away among the traditional streets and forested hillsides.

One of the most impressive is Daisho-in Temple, located at the base of Mount Misen. This beautiful Buddhist temple complex features colourful statues, peaceful halls and beautiful mountain surroundings. It is also a great place to visit before or after taking the ropeway up Mount Misen.

End Your Day with a Final Walk Along the Waterfront

As your day on Miyajima Island comes to an end, take one final walk along the waterfront before catching the ferry back to the mainland. After a busy day of exploring, this is the perfect opportunity to slow down and enjoy the beautiful surroundings one last time.

The views across the Seto Inland Sea are particularly beautiful in the late afternoon, and the atmosphere around the island can feel much more peaceful as many day-trippers begin to leave. Take your time wandering along the coastline, enjoying the views of the mountains and watching the boats travel between Miyajima and the mainland.

For us, Miyajima was the personal highlight of our Japan trip, and ending the day with a final walk along the waterfront was the perfect way to take in everything that makes this island so special. From the iconic floating torii gate and wild deer to the mountain views, beaches and charming streets, Miyajima truly has something for everyone.

We were lucky enough to time our ferry journey perfectly with sunset, which was the perfect end to an already perfect day. Watching the sun go down over the Seto Inland Sea as we travelled back towards the mainland was a truly magical experience and one we will never forget.
