Busan is South Korea’s vibrant coastal city, known for its stunning beaches, colourful cultural villages, bustling seafood markets, and incredible food scene. As the country’s second-largest city, Busan offers a diverse range of neighbourhoods, each with its own unique atmosphere and attractions.
Choosing where to stay in Busan can have a huge impact on your trip. Whether you’re looking for beachfront luxury in Haeundae, lively nightlife and shopping in Seomyeon, or easy access to historic attractions in Nampo, there’s a perfect area for every type of traveller.
During my time in Busan, I quickly realised that each neighbourhood offers a completely different experience. From watching the sunrise over the East Sea to exploring vibrant markets and enjoying some of the best Korean food I’ve ever tasted, Busan is a city that rewards choosing the right base.

Haeundae – Best for First-Time Visitors & Beach Lovers
Haeundae is Busan’s most famous beach district and one of the best areas to stay for first-time visitors. Home to the city’s iconic beach, luxury hotels, waterfront dining, and vibrant nightlife, Haeundae offers the perfect mix of relaxation and entertainment. It’s also well-connected by metro, making it easy to explore the rest of Busan.
We stayed at The Hound Hotel Garden and Terrace. This offered the perfect base to explore the beach, blue line park and was only a short bus journey away from Haedong Yonggungsa Temple.
Seomyeon – Best for Shopping, Food & Nightlife
Often considered the heart of Busan, Seomyeon is packed with shopping streets, restaurants, cafes, and bars. With excellent transport connections, it’s one of the most convenient places to stay if you plan to explore multiple areas of the city. Accommodation options range from budget hostels to modern hotels.
Nampo-dong – Best for Sightseeing & Local Culture
Located near Busan’s historic centre, Nampo-dong is ideal for travellers wanting to experience traditional markets, street food, and cultural attractions. You’ll be within walking distance of Jagalchi Fish Market, BIFF Square, and Busan Tower, making it a great base for sightseeing.
Gwangalli – Best for Scenic Views & Cafes
Gwangalli offers a more laid-back atmosphere than Haeundae while still providing a beautiful beach setting. The area is famous for its views of Gwangan Bridge, especially when illuminated at night. Trendy cafes, restaurants, and beachfront bars make it a favourite among younger travellers.
Songdo – Best for a Relaxed Coastal Escape
If you’re looking for a quieter stay away from the crowds, Songdo is an excellent choice. The area features a scenic beach, coastal walking trails, and the popular Songdo Marine Cable Car. It’s perfect for travellers seeking a slower pace while still being close to central Busan.
