Is Koh Samui Good for a First Trip to Thailand?
If you’re planning your first trip to Thailand, choosing where to go can feel a little overwhelming. With so many incredible places to choose from, it can be difficult to know which destinations are best for first-time visitors.
For me, Koh Samui was part of my very first trip to Thailand, while Andy had previously lived in Thailand, so he already had some experience of travelling around the country. However, neither of us had visited Koh Samui before, so we were both excited to see what the island was like.
And honestly, we really enjoyed our time in Koh Samui.
We loved the beaches, the temples, the food and having so many different things to see and do. There was plenty to keep us busy, but it was also easy to slow down and enjoy some time by the pool or at the beach.
One thing that did surprise us, though, was just how built-up Koh Samui is.
Having already visited places such as Koh Tao and Railay Beach, we were expecting Koh Samui to have a similar tropical island feel. While it certainly has beautiful beaches and plenty of natural scenery, it is much more developed, with busy roads, large hotels, restaurants, shops and plenty of tourism infrastructure.
For us, this wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, there were times when we really appreciated having so many restaurants, shops and things to do close by. However, if you’re looking for a quiet, undeveloped island escape, Koh Samui may not be quite what you’re expecting.
So, is Koh Samui good for a first trip to Thailand?
Having experienced the island for the first time ourselves, we’d say yes. But whether it’s the right choice for you will depend on the type of Thailand experience you’re looking for.
In this guide, we’ll share our honest experience of visiting Koh Samui for the first time, including what we loved, what surprised us, how it compares with other Thai destinations and whether we’d recommend adding it to your first Thailand itinerary.
Why Koh Samui Is Great for First-Time Visitors
For a first trip to Thailand, we think Koh Samui is a great introduction to the country’s islands. It gives you that tropical island experience, but without feeling like you have to be an expert traveller to enjoy it.
For me, this was my first time in Thailand, so I appreciated how easy Koh Samui felt compared with some of the more remote places we visited. Andy had previously lived in Thailand, but it was also our first time on Koh Samui, so we were both discovering the island together.
While Koh Samui is definitely more developed and touristy than places such as Koh Tao and Railay Beach, we actually found that this came with plenty of advantages.
Beautiful Beaches
One of the biggest reasons to visit Koh Samui is, of course, the beaches.
There are plenty to choose from, whether you’re looking for somewhere lively with restaurants and beach bars nearby or somewhere a little quieter where you can simply relax.
We loved having the option to spend time at the beach without needing to plan an entire day around it. You can easily combine a morning of exploring with an afternoon swimming or relaxing by the sea.
The beaches also give you that classic tropical Thailand experience that you might be imagining when planning your first trip to the country.
Plenty of Things to Do
Another reason we think Koh Samui is good for first-time visitors is the sheer amount of things to do.
While relaxing on the beach is certainly an option, there’s much more to the island than just beaches. We enjoyed exploring temples, visiting Fisherman’s Village and experiencing some of the island’s other attractions.
There are also viewpoints, markets, boat trips, restaurants and plenty of opportunities to simply explore.
This makes Koh Samui particularly good if you’re the type of traveller who doesn’t want to spend an entire holiday lying on the beach. You can have a relaxing day one day and then spend the next exploring a completely different part of the island.
Easy to Find Accommodation
Koh Samui has a huge range of accommodation, which is another reason we think it works well for a first trip to Thailand.
Whether you’re looking for a cheap room, a comfortable mid-range hotel or a luxury resort, there are plenty of choices.
We stayed at PTK Residence in Chaweng, which was slightly dated but had absolutely massive rooms, comfortable beds and a huge swimming pool. At around £20 per night, we thought it offered really good value for what we needed.
Having so many accommodation options also means you can choose an area based on the type of holiday you want. If you want nightlife and lots of restaurants, there are areas that suit that. If you’d rather have somewhere quieter, there are plenty of alternatives.

Great Choice for Food
If you’re visiting Thailand for the first time, you’re going to want to try plenty of Thai food, and Koh Samui certainly doesn’t disappoint.
There are local restaurants, street food, markets and international restaurants spread throughout the island, so you’ll have plenty of choice.
We particularly enjoyed having so many restaurants within easy reach. After a day of exploring, it was nice not to have to travel far to find somewhere for dinner.
And if you’re a little nervous about trying completely unfamiliar food on your first trip to Thailand, the number of restaurants serving familiar international dishes can also make the transition easier.
You Don’t Need to Be a Backpacking Expert
Perhaps one of the biggest reasons we’d recommend Koh Samui to first-time visitors is that you don’t need to be an experienced backpacker to enjoy it.
Thailand is an incredibly popular backpacking destination, but you don’t have to travel on a shoestring budget, stay in hostels or have everything planned out to enjoy Koh Samui.
The island has a well-established tourism industry, meaning there are plenty of hotels, restaurants, tours and transport options available.
For a first trip to Thailand, we actually think this can be a positive thing. You can experience the beaches, temples, food and culture without having to worry about navigating somewhere that feels completely unfamiliar.
At the same time, Koh Samui still gives you plenty of opportunities to get away from the busiest tourist areas and explore at your own pace.
For us, this balance was one of the things that made Koh Samui such an enjoyable introduction to Thailand. It is developed and touristy, but that doesn’t necessarily take away from the experience. In fact, for first-time visitors, it can make your trip feel considerably easier.
Is Koh Samui Easy to Get Around?
We found Koh Samui fairly easy to get around. However, it does depend on where you stay.
Koh Samui is a large island. You won’t be able to walk everywhere.
The main tourist areas have plenty of restaurants, shops and attractions nearby. But you’ll need transport if you want to explore more of the island.
There are several options. You can use taxis, songthaews or organised tours. You can also rent a scooter if you’re confident riding one.
We wouldn’t recommend renting a scooter if you have never ridden one before. The roads can be busy, especially around Chaweng.
For first-time visitors to Thailand, we found the transport options reassuring. There are plenty of tourists travelling around the island. Getting from one place to another is usually straightforward.
Is Koh Samui Expensive for First-Time Visitors?
Koh Samui doesn’t have to be expensive. However, it can cost more than some other parts of Thailand.
There is a huge range of accommodation. You can find cheap guesthouses and budget hotels. There are also plenty of luxury resorts.
The same goes for food. Local restaurants and markets can be very affordable. Tourist restaurants and beach clubs will cost more.
We found some great value accommodation during our stay. We stayed at PTK Residence in Chaweng for around £20 per night.
The hotel was a little dated. However, our room was huge. The bed was comfortable. We also had access to a massive swimming pool.
There are also plenty of cheap or free things to do in Koh Samui. You can visit temples, explore markets and relax on the beaches without spending much money.
So, don’t let the cost put you off.
You can make Koh Samui as cheap or as expensive as you want.
Is Koh Samui Too Touristy?
This is something we think you should consider before visiting.
Yes, Koh Samui is touristy.
There is no point pretending otherwise.
We found Koh Samui much more built up than other places we visited in Thailand. Koh Tao and Railay Beach, for example, felt much more like traditional tropical island destinations.
Koh Samui has large hotels, busy roads, shops and plenty of restaurants. You’ll also see lots of tourists.
However, this didn’t ruin our experience.
In fact, there were times when we really enjoyed the convenience. There were plenty of places to eat. We had lots of accommodation choices. There were also plenty of things to do.
Where you stay also makes a big difference.
Some areas are much busier than others. Chaweng, for example, is lively and popular with tourists. Other parts of the island are much quieter.
So, if you’re looking for an untouched island, Koh Samui probably isn’t for you.
But if you want beautiful beaches with plenty of modern conveniences, it can be a great choice.
For first-time visitors to Thailand, we think the touristy side of Koh Samui can actually be a benefit. You get the tropical island experience without having to give up the comforts and convenience you’re used to.
Is Koh Samui Good for Solo Travellers, Couples and Families?
One of the great things about Koh Samui is that it suits many different types of travellers.
Whether you’re travelling alone, as a couple or with children, there is plenty to enjoy.
Solo Travellers
Koh Samui can be a good choice for solo travellers.
The island is popular with tourists, so it can be easy to meet other people. There are also plenty of hostels, hotels, tours and activities to choose from.

You can also choose a quieter area if you want a more relaxed experience.
Couples
We think Koh Samui is a great choice for couples.
There are beautiful beaches and plenty of romantic places to eat. You can also enjoy boat trips, sunsets and quiet days by the pool.
At the same time, there is plenty to do if you don’t want to spend your whole trip relaxing.
We enjoyed having this balance. We could explore during the day and then find a nice restaurant in the evening.
Families
Koh Samui is also popular with families.
There are lots of family-friendly hotels and resorts. Many have swimming pools and other facilities for children.
The island also has plenty of activities for all ages. You can enjoy the beaches, visit temples, explore markets or take a family-friendly boat trip.
The main thing to consider is where you stay. Some areas are much busier than others.
Overall, Koh Samui is a versatile destination. This is another reason we think it works well for a first trip to Thailand.
How Many Days Do You Need in Koh Samui?
We stayed five nights in Koh Samui. For us, this felt like a good amount of time.
It gave us enough time to explore without feeling rushed. We could also have slower days and enjoy the beaches and pool. After doing South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong we were looking forward to slower days on the islands.
If you’re visiting Koh Samui for the first time, we’d recommend at least three days.
Three days gives you enough time to see some of the main sights. You can visit temples, explore Fisherman’s Village and spend some time at the beach.
3 Days in Koh Samui
Three days is enough for a short introduction to the island.
You won’t see everything. However, you can experience some of the main highlights.
4–5 Days in Koh Samui
We think four to five days is ideal.
This gives you more time to explore. You can also slow down and enjoy the island.
This was the amount of time we chose. We never felt like we had run out of things to do.
7 Days in Koh Samui
A week works well if you prefer a slower trip.
You’ll have time for more day trips and activities. You can also spend several days simply relaxing.
If you’re visiting Thailand for the first time, we wouldn’t feel that you need to spend a full week on Koh Samui. This is especially true if you want to see more of Thailand.
For us, five nights was the sweet spot. It gave us enough time to experience Koh Samui without taking too much time away from other destinations.
What Are the Best Things to Do on Your First Trip to Koh Samui?
If it is your first time in Koh Samui, you won’t be short of things to do. The island has a good mix of beaches, temples, markets and activities.
We really enjoyed having this variety. Some days we explored. Other days we simply relaxed by the beach or pool.
Here are some of the things we would recommend adding to your first Koh Samui trip.
Visit the Temples
One of our favourite things to do in Koh Samui was visit the temples.
Koh Samui has several beautiful temples to explore. They are also a great way to experience a different side of the island.
Wat Plai Laem is one of the most popular. The temple complex has colourful buildings and large statues. It is a great place to spend some time exploring.
You can also visit Big Buddha, which is one of Koh Samui’s most recognisable sights.
Temple hopping is also a good budget-friendly activity. Many temples are free to visit, although donations are appreciated.
Remember to dress respectfully when visiting temples. Shoulders and knees should generally be covered.

Explore Fisherman’s Village
Fisherman’s Village was another highlight of our time in Koh Samui.
Located in Bophut, it has a completely different feel from some of the busier parts of the island.
The area is filled with restaurants, shops and bars. There are also plenty of places to sit and enjoy the views over the water.
We loved wandering around and stopping for food. It is a great place to visit in the evening when the area comes alive.
If you are visiting Koh Samui for the first time, we would definitely add Fisherman’s Village to your itinerary.
Relax on Koh Samui’s Beaches
Of course, no first trip to Koh Samui would be complete without spending time on the beaches.
There are plenty to choose from. Some are busy and lively, while others are much quieter.
Chaweng Beach is one of the most popular. It is a good choice if you want to be close to restaurants, shops and nightlife.
If you want something more peaceful, there are plenty of other beaches around the island.
We liked having the option to explore during the day and then spend some time relaxing by the sea.
Visit an Elephant Sanctuary
Visiting an elephant sanctuary was another experience we really enjoyed.
If you have never seen elephants up close before, it can be a memorable part of your Thailand trip.
However, it is important to choose a responsible elephant sanctuary. Look for places that focus on the welfare of the elephants. Avoid experiences that involve riding elephants or performances.
This is also an activity that can take up several hours. It is worth keeping this in mind when planning your itinerary.

Take a Day Trip
If you are staying in Koh Samui for several days, consider taking a day trip.
There are plenty of options available. You can explore nearby islands, go snorkelling or spend the day on the water.
This is a great way to see more of the area around Koh Samui.
We also liked that there was so much choice when it came to tours. You don’t need to plan every activity yourself. There are plenty of organised trips available.
For a first trip to Thailand, this can make things much easier. You can simply choose a trip that interests you and let someone else handle the transport and organisation.
Overall, Koh Samui has a great mix of things to do for first-time visitors. You can spend your days exploring temples and markets. You can also slow down and enjoy the beaches.
For us, this balance was one of the best things about visiting Koh Samui.
Where Should First-Time Visitors Stay in Koh Samui?
Where you stay can make a big difference to your experience of Koh Samui.
The island is quite large, so choosing the right area is important. For a first trip, we would recommend staying somewhere with plenty of restaurants, shops and things to do nearby.
Chaweng
Chaweng is one of the easiest areas for first-time visitors.
It is the busiest and most developed part of Koh Samui. You will find plenty of restaurants, shops, bars and hotels.
It is also home to Chaweng Beach, one of the island’s most popular beaches.
We stayed at PTK Residence in Chaweng. It was slightly dated, but the room was massive and the bed was really comfortable. There was also a huge swimming pool.
Best of all, we paid around £20 per night.
We liked staying in Chaweng because there was so much nearby. We could easily find somewhere to eat or head to the beach without needing transport.
However, we would recommend checking exactly where your hotel is located.
Some parts of Chaweng can be very busy. If you want a quieter night’s sleep, staying a few streets away from the main nightlife area could be a better option.
Bophut
Bophut is another great option for first-time visitors.
It is home to Fisherman’s Village, which was one of our favourite places on the island.
There are lots of restaurants, bars and shops here. The atmosphere is also a little more relaxed than central Chaweng.
Bophut is a good choice if you want convenience without being right in the middle of the busiest nightlife.
Lamai
Lamai is another popular area to consider.
It has a good selection of hotels, restaurants and shops. It also has a beautiful beach.
Lamai tends to feel a little more relaxed than Chaweng. This makes it a good option if you want to explore Koh Samui but don’t want to stay in the busiest area.
Which Area Is Best for First-Time Visitors?
For a first trip to Koh Samui, we think Chaweng or Bophut are two of the easiest areas to choose.
Chaweng is great if you want lots of restaurants, shops and activities close by.
Bophut is better if you want a slightly more relaxed atmosphere while still having plenty nearby.
If nightlife isn’t important to you, we would avoid staying directly on the busiest streets in Chaweng.
Koh Samui is already quite developed and touristy. You don’t need to stay right in the middle of the action to enjoy everything the island has to offer.
