Where to Stay in Koh Lanta: Best Areas for Every Type of Traveller

Choosing where to stay in Koh Lanta can be a little overwhelming when you first start looking at accommodation. The island is quite spread out, and each area has a slightly different atmosphere, from busy and convenient to quiet and secluded.

We stayed near Long Beach during our time on Koh Lanta, which we found to be a great base for exploring the island. There were restaurants and shops nearby, and we were within easy reach of the beach. It also gave us a good starting point for exploring some of the other areas of Koh Lanta.

We visited in September during the low season, so our experience was much quieter than you might expect during peak season. Some businesses were closed or operating reduced hours, which is something to keep in mind when choosing where to stay, particularly if you’re visiting outside the main tourist season.

In this guide, I’ll break down the best areas to stay in Koh Lanta and explain what each area is like, who it is best suited to and what you can expect from staying there. Whether you’re looking for a beautiful beach, a quiet escape, somewhere convenient or a budget-friendly base, I’ll help you decide where to stay in Koh Lanta.

Best Areas to Stay in Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is quite a spread-out island, so choosing the right area is important. The west coast is where you’ll find most of the island’s beaches and tourist accommodation, while Saladan and Koh Lanta Old Town offer something a little different.

We stayed near Long Beach, which worked really well for us. It gave us easy access to the beach and plenty of places to eat, while also being a good base for exploring other parts of the island.

Long Beach – Best for First-Time Visitors

Long Beach, also known as Phra Ae Beach, is one of the most popular areas to stay in Koh Lanta and is a great choice for first-time visitors.

The beach is long and sandy, with plenty of accommodation, restaurants, cafés and beach bars nearby. Despite being one of the more developed areas, it still has a relaxed feel and doesn’t feel overly built up.

We stayed at Peaceful Resort, which was a short distance from Long Beach. We found it to be a really convenient base for our time on Koh Lanta, with the beach, restaurants and other amenities all within easy reach. The resort also has an outdoor swimming pool, which was a nice bonus after a day of exploring.

We visited in September, so the area was extremely quiet during our stay. This meant we didn’t have to deal with crowds, but it also meant that some nearby businesses were closed or operating reduced hours because it was low season.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, beach lovers and travellers who want plenty of restaurants nearby.

Klong Dao Beach – Best for Families

Klong Dao Beach is located in the north of Koh Lanta, close to Saladan and the island’s main arrival point.

The beach is wide and sandy, with generally calm, shallow water during suitable conditions. There are plenty of hotels, resorts and restaurants nearby, making it a convenient option for families.

Its northern location also means you won’t have as far to travel after arriving on the island.

Best for: Families, first-time visitors and travellers looking for convenience.

Klong Khong – Best for Budget Travellers

Klong Khong is a good option if you’re looking for more affordable accommodation and a laid-back atmosphere.

There are plenty of budget-friendly resorts, bungalows and guesthouses in the area, along with relaxed beach bars and restaurants.

The beach itself is more rocky in places and isn’t always the best option for swimming, particularly around low tide. For us, this would be an area we’d choose more for the accommodation and atmosphere than if having a perfect beach directly outside our hotel was the priority.

Best for: Backpackers, budget travellers and travellers looking for a relaxed atmosphere.

Klong Nin – Best for a Quieter Beach Stay

Klong Nin is further south than Long Beach and offers a good balance between having plenty of facilities and enjoying a quieter atmosphere.

There are restaurants, bars and accommodation along the beach, but it generally feels less busy than the northern parts of Koh Lanta.

If you want to be somewhere peaceful without feeling completely isolated, Klong Nin is worth considering.

Best for: Couples, relaxed travellers and anyone looking for a quieter beach stay.

Kantiang Bay – Best for a Secluded Getaway

Kantiang Bay is one of the southernmost areas on this list and has a much more secluded feel.

The bay is surrounded by green hills, giving it a beautiful backdrop, and there are some more upscale resorts in the area. It’s a good choice if your main priority is getting away from the busier parts of the island.

The downside is that you’re further away from Saladan and many of the island’s restaurants and shops, so having your own transport can be useful.

Best for: Couples, luxury travellers, honeymoons and peaceful getaways.

Saladan – Best for Convenience

Saladan is located at the northern end of Koh Lanta and is where many visitors first arrive on the island.

It’s more of a working town than a traditional beach resort, with shops, restaurants, markets and transport connections. This makes it a practical place to stay if convenience is more important to you than being directly beside one of Koh Lanta’s best beaches.

Personally, I would choose somewhere along the west coast for a longer beach holiday, but Saladan could work well for a short stay or if you want easy access to transport.

Best for: Short stays, convenience, restaurants and transport connections.

Koh Lanta Old Town – Best for Local Atmosphere

Koh Lanta Old Town is located on the east coast and offers a very different experience from the beach areas.

The historic town is known for its traditional wooden buildings, waterfront setting and more local atmosphere. It’s a lovely place to visit and explore, but it wouldn’t be my first choice for somewhere to stay if your main reason for visiting Koh Lanta is the beaches.

Staying here would suit travellers who want something quieter and more cultural and don’t mind being further away from the main west-coast beaches.

Best for: Local atmosphere, culture, food and travellers looking for something different from a traditional beach stay.

When booking your accommodation, remember that Koh Lanta can feel very different depending on the season. We visited in September and found the island extremely quiet, with some hotels, restaurants and other businesses operating reduced hours or closing for the low season. If you’re visiting at this time of year, I’d check that your chosen hotel and the businesses around it are operating during your dates.

Tips for Choosing Where to Stay in Koh Lanta

Choosing the right area can make a big difference to your experience in Koh Lanta. The island is quite spread out, so it is worth thinking about what you want from your location before booking your accommodation.

Consider How You Will Get Around

One of the biggest things to consider when choosing where to stay in Koh Lanta is how you plan to get around. The island is fairly spread out, so staying somewhere that suits your transport plans can save you a lot of time.

If you are comfortable riding a scooter, you will have much more freedom to explore different beaches, restaurants and attractions. If you would rather not ride, I would recommend choosing a more convenient area such as Long Beach or Klong Dao, where you will have plenty of restaurants and shops within easy reach.

You can also use taxis and tuk-tuks, but these can become more expensive if you are relying on them for every journey.

Choose Your Beach Carefully

Not all of Koh Lanta’s beaches have the same atmosphere, so think about what you want from your beach before booking.

Long Beach is a great option if you want a long stretch of sand with plenty of accommodation, restaurants and beach bars nearby. Klong Dao is another convenient choice, particularly for families, while Klong Nin and Kantiang Bay offer a quieter atmosphere further south.

We stayed near Long Beach and found it to be a really convenient base. We could easily get to the beach, restaurants and shops, while still having a good location for exploring more of the island.

Check What Is Open During Low Season

If you are visiting Koh Lanta during the low season, check what is actually open before booking your accommodation.

We visited in September and found the island to be extremely quiet. We really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, but some restaurants, shops and other businesses were closed or operating reduced hours.

This is particularly important if you want to stay somewhere quiet or further south. During the busier months, you will generally have more choice when it comes to restaurants, beach bars, tours and other activities.

Book Somewhere Close to Restaurants and Shops

If you do not plan on hiring a scooter, staying close to restaurants and shops can make your trip much easier.

Even if you do have your own transport, having places to eat and pick up essentials nearby is convenient. Long Beach is a good example of this, with plenty of accommodation, restaurants and shops in the surrounding area.

We found this particularly useful during our stay because it meant we did not have to travel far every time we wanted to eat or pick something up. For us, having that convenience while still being close to the beach made Long Beach a great base for exploring Koh Lanta.
