How Many Days Do You Need in Koh Lanta?

Planning a trip to Koh Lanta but not sure how many days you actually need? It can be tricky to work out how long to stay when there are so many other places to visit in Thailand.

We visited Koh Lanta as part of our wider Thailand trip and found that it was the kind of island where we could easily slow down and enjoy a few relaxed days. With long beaches, beautiful sunsets, boat trips and plenty of places to explore, there is enough to keep you busy without needing to pack your itinerary.

In this guide, I’ll explain how many days you need in Koh Lanta, whether you are visiting for just two days or have five days or more. I’ll also share a simple 4-day Koh Lanta itinerary to help you make the most of your time on the island.

How Many Days Do You Need in Koh Lanta?

I would recommend spending 3 to 5 days in Koh Lanta. This gives you enough time to enjoy the beaches, explore some of the island and take a boat trip without having to pack too much into each day.

Koh Lanta is the kind of place where I think it is worth slowing down. Rather than filling every day with activities, you can spend a morning at the beach, explore somewhere new in the afternoon and watch the sunset in the evening.

2 Days in Koh Lanta

Two days is enough for a quick visit, but it will feel fairly short. You could spend one day exploring the island and visiting places such as Old Town or Mu Ko Lanta National Park, then dedicate another day to the beach or a boat trip.

I would choose two days if Koh Lanta is one stop on a longer Thailand itinerary and you are trying to fit in several destinations.

3 to 4 Days in Koh Lanta

For me, 3 to 4 days is a great amount of time for a first visit. You can enjoy several different beaches, explore the island, have a relaxing day and fit in a boat or snorkelling trip.

It also gives you some flexibility if the weather changes, which can be particularly useful if you are visiting during the rainy season.

5 Days or More in Koh Lanta

If you want a slower beach holiday, 5 days or more works really well. You will have plenty of time to explore without rushing and can easily leave some days completely free.

This is also a good option if you are travelling as a couple and mainly want to relax rather than move from one attraction to another.

We visited Koh Lanta during September and found the island extremely quiet, which made it particularly easy to enjoy a slower pace. However, because it was low season, some businesses were closed or operating reduced hours, so there were fewer activities and restaurant options than you might find during the busier months.

So, How Long Should You Spend in Koh Lanta?

For most people, I would recommend 3 to 5 days in Koh Lanta. Three days works well for seeing the highlights, while four or five days gives you more time to relax and explore at your own pace.

If you are visiting during low season, I would also allow some flexibility in your itinerary. Weather can be unpredictable, so having an extra day means you have more chance of fitting in a boat trip or outdoor activity when conditions are good.

Tips for Planning Your Koh Lanta Itinerary

Planning a Koh Lanta itinerary is fairly easy because the island is more about slowing down than trying to see as much as possible. I would recommend leaving yourself some flexibility rather than planning every hour of your trip.

Leave Some Time to Relax

One of the best things about Koh Lanta is its relaxed atmosphere, so don’t feel like you need to fill every day with activities.

Leave some time for long beach days, swimming, sunset and simply wandering around without a plan. If you are staying for four or five days, having a couple of slower days can make the trip feel much more enjoyable.

Check the Weather Before Booking Activities

If you are planning a boat trip, snorkelling excursion or other outdoor activity, keep an eye on the weather forecast.

This is particularly important if you are visiting during the rainy season. Rather than booking every activity in advance, it can be useful to leave some flexibility in your itinerary so you can choose the best day for a boat trip once you are on the island.

Consider the Season You Visit

The time of year can make quite a big difference to your Koh Lanta experience.

We visited in September, during the low season, and the island was extremely quiet. We enjoyed having fewer people around, but some restaurants, shops and other businesses were closed or operating reduced hours.

If you want more choice when it comes to restaurants, tours and activities, I would personally consider visiting during the shoulder or peak season. However, if you don’t mind quieter days and a more limited choice of businesses, low season can still be a great time to experience Koh Lanta.
