Where to Stay in Koh Samui: Best Areas for Every Traveller

Choosing where to stay in Koh Samui can make a huge difference to your experience on the island. While Koh Samui is relatively easy to explore, each area has a very different atmosphere, from the lively streets and nightlife of Chaweng to the relaxed beach vibes of Lamai and the restaurants and evening atmosphere around Fisherman’s Village.

When we first started planning our trip, we found it difficult to know which area would be the best fit. Koh Samui is a fairly large island, and choosing the wrong location could mean spending more time travelling around than actually enjoying your holiday.

After spending five nights on the island, we found that Chaweng was a great base for us, giving us easy access to restaurants, shops and the beach. However, there are plenty of other areas that could be a better choice depending on what you want from your trip.

In this guide, we’ll take you through the best areas to stay in Koh Samui, including what each area is like, who it is best suited to and what you can expect to find nearby. Whether you’re visiting Koh Samui for the first time, looking for a relaxing beach escape or want to be close to the nightlife, this guide will help you choose the best place to stay.

Where We Stayed in Koh Samui

We chose to stay in Chaweng, mainly because we wanted somewhere with plenty of restaurants, shops and things going on within easy walking distance. After spending five nights here, we found it was a really convenient base for exploring Koh Samui.

Our hotel, PTK Residence Chaweng, was definitely not the most luxurious place we stayed during our Thailand trip, and the building felt a little dated. However, for around £20 a night, we honestly couldn’t complain. Our room was huge, the bed was really comfortable and the hotel had a massive swimming pool, which was particularly welcome after spending time out in Koh Samui’s hot and humid weather.

What we really enjoyed about Chaweng was the atmosphere. As soon as we stepped outside, there was something happening around us. There were restaurants and bars lining the streets, shops selling everything from souvenirs to beachwear, and plenty of places to stop for food or a cold drink. It meant that in the evenings we could simply walk out of the hotel and have loads of options without needing to organise transport.

Chaweng Beach was also right at the heart of the area, giving us an easy place to escape to when we wanted some downtime. We loved having the combination of a busy town, plenty of food choices and a beautiful beach all within the same area.

That said, where you stay within Chaweng matters. While we loved being close to everything, we would probably choose our accommodation slightly differently if we returned. Some parts of Chaweng can be busy and lively, particularly at night, so if you’re looking for a quieter night’s sleep, we’d recommend staying a little further away from the busiest streets rather than right in the middle of the action.

For us, Chaweng worked really well because we liked having everything on our doorstep. But if you’re visiting Koh Samui and your priority is peace and quiet, there are other areas of the island that may suit you much better.

Best Areas to Stay in Koh Samui

Koh Samui has a good mix of lively beach towns, quieter coastal areas and more upmarket resorts, so the best area to stay really depends on what you want from your trip.

For first-time visitors, Chaweng is probably the easiest all-round base, while Lamai offers a slightly more relaxed alternative. Bophut and Fisherman’s Village are great if restaurants and a more laid-back evening atmosphere are important to you, while Maenam and Choeng Mon are better suited to travellers looking to escape the busier parts of the island.

Chaweng – Best for First-Time Visitors and Nightlife

Chaweng is one of the most popular areas to stay in Koh Samui and is a great choice if you want to be close to everything. It has a long sandy beach, plenty of restaurants and bars, shops, markets and lots of accommodation options.

This is where we chose to stay during our five nights in Koh Samui, and for us, it worked really well as a base. We loved being able to walk out of our hotel and immediately have so many restaurants and places to eat nearby. There was always something going on, and we never felt stuck for somewhere to go in the evening.

We stayed at PTK Residence Chaweng, which was a little dated but offered a huge room, a comfortable bed and a massive swimming pool. At around £20 a night, it was excellent value for us and gave us a comfortable base without spending a fortune.

One thing we would recommend, though, is paying attention to exactly where your accommodation is located in Chaweng. The area can get busy and lively at night, and some streets are much louder than others. We enjoyed being close to everything but, if we returned, we’d probably stay a few streets back from the busiest part.

If Chaweng sounds a little too busy for you, Lamai is a great alternative. It still has plenty of restaurants, shops, bars and accommodation, but generally has a more relaxed atmosphere.

Bophut is one of the best areas to stay in Koh Samui if you want somewhere with a relaxed but lively atmosphere. The highlight is Fisherman’s Village, known for its restaurants, bars, shops and beachfront setting.

Rather than having the party atmosphere associated with some parts of Chaweng, Fisherman’s Village has a more laid-back feel. It’s a great place to spend an evening wandering around, grabbing dinner and enjoying a drink by the sea.

Bophut is also a convenient choice if you want to explore the island while still having plenty of restaurants and things to do close to your accommodation.

Recommended Places to Stay in Bophut & Fisherman’s Village

Maenam – Best for a Peaceful Escape

For those who want to get away from Koh Samui’s busier tourist areas, Maenam is a great option. Located on the northern coast of the island, Maenam has a much quieter and more laid-back feel than Chaweng.

The area is centred around a long sandy beach and is ideal if your idea of a Koh Samui holiday involves slow mornings, relaxing by the sea and enjoying a quieter pace of life.

There are still restaurants and local amenities around, but you won’t find the same concentration of nightlife and tourist activity as you would in Chaweng.

Recommended Places to Stay in Maenam

Budget: The Cosy Maenam Beach Resort – A highly rated option right by Maenam Beach, with chalet-style accommodation, balconies and ocean or garden views.

Mid-range: Samui Buri Beach Resort – A beachfront resort with an infinity pool, traditional Thai-style architecture and a choice of rooms and private-pool villas.

Best for: Peace and quiet, couples, longer stays and travellers looking for a relaxing beach escape.

Choeng Mon – Best for Families and Relaxation

Choeng Mon is another quieter area of Koh Samui and can be a great choice for families or anyone looking for a more peaceful holiday. The beach is sheltered and the area has a relaxed resort feel without being completely isolated.

You’ll find a selection of hotels and resorts, along with restaurants and local shops, but it generally feels much less hectic than Chaweng.

Its location in the northeast of Koh Samui also makes it convenient for reaching other parts of the island, while still giving you somewhere peaceful to return to at the end of the day.

Recommended Places to Stay in Choeng Mon

Budget: Samui Honey Cottages Beach Resort – A beachfront option with private bungalows, two swimming pools, a restaurant and family rooms. It’s a good choice if you want to stay directly by Choeng Mon Beach.

Mid-range: Bay Beach Resort – A relaxed beachfront resort with a swimming pool, gardens and restaurant, offering a quieter alternative to the busier parts of Koh Samui.

Luxury: SALA Samui Choengmon Beach Resort – A luxury beachfront resort with two pools, a spa and a choice of rooms and private-pool villas. It’s a particularly good option if you’re looking for a peaceful resort stay.

Best for: Families, couples, relaxing holidays and travellers who prefer quieter surroundings.

Final Verdict: Where Is the Best Area to Stay in Koh Samui?

There really isn’t one best area to stay in Koh Samui — it depends on what you want from your trip. Chaweng is the easiest choice for first-time visitors who want restaurants, shops, beaches and nightlife all within walking distance. It was also the area we chose, and we loved the convenience, although we would stay slightly further away from the busiest streets next time.

If you want something a little quieter, Lamai is a great alternative, while Bophut and Fisherman’s Village are ideal if good restaurants and a relaxed evening atmosphere are more important to you than nightlife.

For a peaceful beach escape, we’d look at Maenam, while Choeng Mon is particularly appealing for families and anyone wanting a quieter, more resort-style stay.

For us, Chaweng was the best area to stay in Koh Samui, simply because we enjoyed having so much on our doorstep. However, we’d recommend choosing your accommodation carefully. Staying directly on the busiest part of Chaweng isn’t necessarily the best choice if you value a good night’s sleep.

Ultimately, the best area comes down to your travel style:

  • Chaweng: Best for first-time visitors, convenience and nightlife
  • Lamai: Best for a quieter alternative to Chaweng
  • Bophut & Fisherman’s Village: Best for couples, restaurants and atmosphere
  • Maenam: Best for peace, quiet and budget-friendly stays
  • Choeng Mon: Best for families and a relaxing resort holiday
