Is Koh Samui Worth Visiting in August? What to Expect
If you’re planning a trip to Thailand and August is the only time you can travel, you might be wondering whether Koh Samui is worth visiting in August. After all, August falls within Thailand’s rainy season, so it’s understandable to worry that your trip could be filled with constant rain and grey skies.
But does visiting Koh Samui in August actually mean you’ll spend your entire holiday stuck inside?
Not necessarily.
We visited Koh Samui in August and, while the weather wasn’t perfect every day, we were still able to enjoy the island and make the most of our time there. Like much of Thailand during the rainy season, the weather can be unpredictable, but rain doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll have a complete washout.
In fact, one of the things we quickly realised about visiting Thailand in August is that the weather can change surprisingly quickly. You might have a shower one minute and be back to sunshine not long afterwards.
So, if you’re considering visiting Koh Samui in August, here’s everything you need to know about what it’s really like, from the weather and rainfall to things to do and whether we’d recommend visiting at this time of year.
What Is the Weather Like in Koh Samui in August?
One of the biggest questions you’ll probably have when planning a trip to Koh Samui in August is what the weather is actually like.
August is part of the rainy season in Thailand, but Koh Samui’s weather pattern is slightly different from some of the country’s other popular destinations. While you should expect some rain, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it will rain all day, every day.
During our time in Koh Samui, we found the weather to be a real mixture. We had plenty of warm and sunny periods, but we also experienced some rain and cloudy spells.
The good thing was that the rain didn’t always last very long. When showers did arrive, they could be quite heavy, but they often passed relatively quickly, giving us plenty of time to get out and explore afterwards.
Of course, this is one of the downsides of visiting during August. You can’t guarantee perfect beach weather every day, and if you’re hoping for uninterrupted sunshine throughout your entire trip, you may be better off travelling during the dry season.
However, we wouldn’t let the possibility of rain put you off visiting Koh Samui in August.
If you’re happy to be a little flexible with your plans, you can still have a fantastic trip. We found that the key was simply not planning every day around a specific activity that depended on perfect weather. That way, if the weather changed, we could adjust our plans rather than feeling like we’d missed out.
And when the sun did come out, we made the most of it!
So, is Koh Samui worth visiting in August? In our experience, yes. You just need to go knowing that the weather can be unpredictable and be prepared to work around the occasional rain shower.

Does It Rain Every Day in Koh Samui in August?
One of the biggest concerns we had before visiting Koh Samui in August was whether we were going to spend our entire trip in the rain. After all, August is often described as part of Thailand’s rainy season, so it is easy to assume that you’ll have wet weather every day.
Thankfully, that wasn’t our experience at all.
While we did have some rain during our time in Koh Samui, it certainly didn’t mean constant rain throughout the day. The weather could change quickly, with periods of sunshine followed by showers and then clearer skies again.
In fact, August is not one of Koh Samui’s wettest months. Long-term climate data puts average August rainfall at around 111mm, with roughly 15 days experiencing some rainfall. November is considerably wetter, with average rainfall of more than 500mm according to Weather Atlas.
Of course, those rainfall statistics don’t mean that it will rain for half the day on 15 separate days. A “rainy day” can simply mean a short shower at some point during the day.
This is something worth keeping in mind when planning a trip to Koh Samui in August. You might wake up to cloudy skies or have a heavy shower in the afternoon, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the rest of your day is ruined.
For us, the biggest advantage was simply being flexible. We didn’t let the weather completely dictate our plans, and when the sun came out, we made the most of it.
So, if you’re worried that Koh Samui in August means rain every day, we wouldn’t let that put you off. You should definitely expect some wet weather, but there’s still a good chance of plenty of sunshine and enjoyable beach days too.
How Hot Is Koh Samui in August?
If you’re hoping for a warm tropical holiday, Koh Samui in August certainly delivers.
Average daytime highs are around 31–32°C, while nighttime temperatures generally stay around 25°C. The sea is also very warm at around 29°C, making it a great temperature for swimming and spending time in the water.
We found the heat much like you’d expect from a tropical Thai island. Even when the weather was cloudy, it could still feel very warm, and the humidity meant that walking around for long periods could become uncomfortable.
The good thing about August is that the occasional rain shower can actually be quite welcome. A heavy downpour can cool things down temporarily before the heat returns.
I’d recommend packing plenty of lightweight, breathable clothing, a reusable water bottle and plenty of sun protection. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you won’t need sunscreen just because you’re visiting during the rainy season — when the clouds clear, the sun can be incredibly strong.
Overall, if you’re looking for hot weather and warm seas, Koh Samui in August is still very much a tropical beach destination. You just need to be prepared for the occasional shower and the high humidity.

Is Koh Samui Busy in August?
One of the things we really liked about visiting Koh Samui in August was that it didn’t feel overwhelmingly busy. August falls outside the main peak season, so while there were still plenty of tourists around, we didn’t feel like the island was completely packed.
You’ll still find busy areas, particularly around popular beaches, restaurants and tourist attractions, but it felt manageable during our visit.
We actually think August can be a good compromise if you want to experience Koh Samui without the huge crowds you can get during the busiest months. You still get the lively atmosphere that makes the island enjoyable, but you don’t necessarily feel surrounded by tourists everywhere you go.
Of course, how busy Koh Samui feels will also depend on where you stay. Popular areas such as Chaweng are naturally going to feel much busier than quieter parts of the island.
For us, the combination of warm weather, occasional rain and fewer crowds made August a surprisingly enjoyable time to experience Koh Samui.
Is Koh Samui Expensive in August?
Koh Samui can be one of the more expensive Thai islands, but visiting in August can be a good way to keep some of your costs down.
As August falls outside the main high season, accommodation prices can be more reasonable than during the busiest periods. You can also find plenty of options for different budgets, from simple guesthouses and hostels to mid-range hotels and luxury resorts.
Of course, how much you spend will depend heavily on your travel style. Eating at local restaurants and street-food stalls can be very affordable, while tourist restaurants, beach clubs and organised excursions can quickly increase your daily spending.
We found that you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy Koh Samui. There are plenty of free or inexpensive things to do, including visiting temples, exploring local markets and enjoying the beaches.
If you’re travelling Thailand on a budget, August could therefore be worth considering. Just don’t assume that everything will be significantly cheaper because it’s the rainy season. Koh Samui is still a popular tourist destination year-round.
What to Pack for Koh Samui in August
Packing for Koh Samui in August is fairly straightforward, but there are a few things we’d definitely recommend bringing because of the combination of heat, humidity and occasional rain.
Lightweight Clothing
You’ll want plenty of lightweight, breathable clothing. Temperatures can reach around 31–32°C during the day, so loose-fitting clothes are much more comfortable than anything heavy.
Swimwear
Obviously, don’t forget your swimwear. Even though you’re visiting during the rainy season, you’ll hopefully have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beaches and swimming.
Sun Cream
Sun protection is essential. The sun can be incredibly strong when it comes out, even during the rainy season.
Lightweight Rain Jacket
A small, lightweight rain jacket is worth throwing into your bag. We wouldn’t bother bringing anything heavy — you want something you can easily carry around with you.
Waterproof Bag
A waterproof bag or dry bag can be useful for protecting your phone, camera and other valuables if you get caught in a sudden downpour.
Comfortable Shoes
If you plan on exploring beyond the beaches, bring a comfortable pair of shoes. You’ll likely be doing plenty of walking, particularly if you want to explore temples and viewpoints.
Insect Repellent
Mosquitoes can be an issue in Thailand, particularly around the wetter areas, so insect repellent is another thing we’d recommend packing.
Overall, you don’t need to pack specifically for constant rain. Think tropical holiday first, with a little preparation for unpredictable weather.

Would We Visit Koh Samui in August Again?
Yes, we would.
While August probably wouldn’t be our first choice if we were planning a trip specifically around guaranteed sunshine, our experience showed us that visiting Koh Samui during this month can still be well worth it.
We didn’t spend our entire trip hiding from the rain, and the occasional showers didn’t stop us from exploring, eating out and enjoying the island.
We also liked that August didn’t feel overwhelmingly busy, and the warm temperatures meant that it still felt like the tropical island getaway we had imagined.
That said, if we had complete flexibility over when to visit Koh Samui, we’d probably choose a month with more reliable weather.
But if August is the only time you can travel, we definitely wouldn’t rule Koh Samui out.
Just go with realistic expectations, keep your itinerary flexible and don’t panic when you see rain in the forecast.
Final Verdict: Is Koh Samui Worth Visiting in August?
