Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors

Choosing where to stay in Bangkok can make a huge difference to your trip. Bangkok is a huge, busy city, and while the different neighbourhoods can look close together on a map, traffic can make getting between them surprisingly time-consuming.

For first-time visitors, the best place to stay usually comes down to location, transport links and what you want to see and do. Areas such as Sukhumvit, Siam, Silom, Riverside, Chinatown and Bangkok’s Old Town all offer something different.

One of our biggest tips is to choose accommodation close to a BTS Skytrain or MRT station where possible. Having easy access to public transport can save you a huge amount of time, particularly during Bangkok’s busiest periods.

Sukhumvit: Best Area to Stay in Bangkok for First-Time Visitors

If you’re visiting Bangkok for the first time and aren’t sure where to stay, Sukhumvit is one of the easiest choices.

The area stretches along the BTS Sukhumvit Line and includes popular neighbourhoods such as Asok, Phrom Phong, Thonglor and Ekkamai. Staying near one of these stations makes it much easier to explore different parts of the city without relying on taxis.

Sukhumvit is also packed with restaurants, cafés, shopping malls, bars and street food, meaning you’ll have plenty to do close to your hotel.

Why Stay in Sukhumvit?

  • Excellent BTS and MRT connections
  • Huge choice of hotels for different budgets
  • Plenty of restaurants and street food
  • Great shopping
  • Lively nightlife
  • Easy access to other parts of Bangkok

The main downside is that Sukhumvit feels modern and urban rather than historic. If you’re visiting Bangkok mainly for temples and traditional sights, the Old Town may be a better choice.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, solo travellers, foodies and nightlife.

Siam: Best Area for Shopping and Families

Siam is another excellent option for first-time visitors, particularly if you want to be close to Bangkok’s biggest shopping malls.

The area is centred around Siam BTS Station, making it an incredibly convenient base for exploring the city. You’ll find major shopping destinations, restaurants and entertainment within easy reach.

Siam is also a good choice for families because of its central location and straightforward public transport connections.

Why Stay in Siam?

  • Excellent BTS connections
  • Close to major shopping malls
  • Lots of restaurants and cafés
  • Central location
  • Convenient for families
  • Easy to reach other neighbourhoods

One of the biggest drawbacks is that Siam is more focused on modern Bangkok than historic attractions, so you’ll need to travel to reach sights such as the Grand Palace and Wat Pho.

Best for: Families, shoppers and first-time visitors who want a central location.

Silom & Sathorn: Best for Food, Nightlife and a Central Location

Silom and Sathorn offer a nice balance between Bangkok’s modern city centre and its more traditional side.

Silom is home to plenty of restaurants, bars and hotels, while nearby Lumphini Park provides a welcome break from the city’s busy streets. The area is served by both BTS and MRT stations, making it convenient for sightseeing.

There is also a good selection of accommodation, from affordable hotels to luxury properties.

Why Stay in Silom?

  • BTS and MRT connections
  • Great restaurants
  • Rooftop bars and nightlife
  • Close to Lumphini Park
  • Good choice of hotels
  • Convenient for exploring Bangkok

For a mid-range stay, Centre Point Plus Hotel Silom is one option to consider, while Shangri-La Bangkok offers a more luxurious riverside location nearby.

Best for: Couples, foodies, nightlife and travellers wanting a convenient central base.

Riverside: Best Area for Luxury and River Views

For a more relaxed Bangkok experience, consider staying along the Chao Phraya River.

The Riverside is home to some of Bangkok’s most luxurious hotels and offers beautiful views across the river. It’s a particularly appealing option for couples or anyone looking to make their accommodation part of the experience.

The area is also well placed for exploring attractions along the river, although you’ll want to make use of river boats and taxis rather than relying solely on the BTS.

Why Stay on the Riverside?

  • Beautiful Chao Phraya River views
  • Luxury hotels
  • Quieter atmosphere
  • Romantic setting
  • Easy access to river attractions

For a luxury stay, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is one of the city’s iconic options. For something more mid-range, Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok is another popular choice.

Best for: Couples, luxury travellers and anyone wanting a quieter stay.

Bangkok Old Town: Best for Temples and History

If your main reason for visiting Bangkok is to see its famous temples and historic attractions, staying in Bangkok’s Old Town (Rattanakosin) can be a great choice.

This is where you’ll find some of the city’s biggest attractions, including the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. The area has a much more traditional feel than modern districts such as Sukhumvit.

The main disadvantage is transport. The Old Town isn’t served directly by the BTS Skytrain, so you’ll generally rely on river boats, the MRT at the edges of the area or taxis.

Why Stay in Bangkok Old Town?

  • Close to Bangkok’s most famous temples
  • Historic atmosphere
  • Plenty of local restaurants and markets
  • Good choice of budget and boutique accommodation
  • Great for sightseeing

Best for: First-time visitors focused on temples, history and culture.

Chinatown: Best Area for Foodies

Bangkok’s Chinatown, known as Yaowarat, is one of the city’s most exciting areas to stay if food is a major part of your trip.

The streets become particularly lively in the evening, when restaurants and street food stalls fill the area. Chinatown also has a convenient MRT connection, making it easier to explore other parts of Bangkok.

Why Stay in Chinatown?

  • Incredible street food
  • Lively atmosphere
  • Great evening scene
  • Interesting markets and streets to explore
  • MRT access

The downside is that Chinatown can be noisy and hectic, so it may not be the best choice if you’re looking for somewhere peaceful.

Best for: Foodies, couples and travellers looking for atmosphere.

Khao San Road: Best for Backpackers

Khao San Road and the surrounding Banglamphu area are particularly popular with backpackers and budget travellers.

You’ll find plenty of inexpensive accommodation, casual restaurants, bars and nightlife. It’s also relatively close to many of Bangkok’s historic sights.

However, Khao San Road is not directly connected to the BTS Skytrain, so getting around the wider city can be less convenient than staying in Sukhumvit, Siam or Silom.

Why Stay Near Khao San Road?

  • Budget accommodation
  • Backpacker-friendly atmosphere
  • Lots of bars and restaurants
  • Close to Bangkok’s Old Town
  • Plenty happening at night

Best for: Backpackers, solo travellers and budget-conscious visitors.

Where Should First-Time Visitors Stay in Bangkok?

For most first-time visitors, we’d recommend Sukhumvit if convenience and transport are your priorities. It’s easy to get around, has an enormous choice of restaurants and accommodation, and gives you plenty of flexibility during your trip.

However, the best area really depends on the type of trip you’re planning.

  • Best overall: Sukhumvit
  • Best for shopping: Siam
  • Best for food and nightlife: Silom
  • Best for luxury: Riverside
  • Best for temples: Old Town
  • Best for food and atmosphere: Chinatown
  • Best for backpackers: Khao San Road

Wherever you choose, try to book somewhere within easy walking distance of a BTS or MRT station. This is one of the simplest ways to make getting around Bangkok considerably easier.

Our Experience Staying in Bangkok

When we visited Bangkok, we stayed at New Siam II, which we found to be a great base for exploring the city. It had everything we needed after busy days of sightseeing, including a swimming pool, restaurant and large, comfortable beds.

While it isn’t in one of the modern BTS-connected areas mentioned above, we found the location particularly useful for exploring Bangkok’s historic sights and the surrounding Old Town. For us, having somewhere comfortable to return to after a full day exploring the city made a big difference.

If you’re planning a first trip to Bangkok, don’t feel like you need to stay in the most modern or expensive part of the city. The best area is ultimately the one that fits what you want to see, your budget and how you want to experience Bangkok.
