Koh Tao in August: Is It Worth Visiting?

August might not be the first month that comes to mind when planning a trip to Koh Tao. Thailand’s weather can be unpredictable during this time of year, and the possibility of rain might make you wonder whether visiting a tropical island is really worth it.

Having visited Koh Tao in August ourselves, we’d say yes — it is still worth visiting.

We spent five nights on the island and, while we did have one full day of rain, the weather didn’t ruin our trip. For the most part, we still had plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beaches, explore the island and relax.

August isn’t necessarily the perfect month for guaranteed sunshine, but if you’re already travelling through Thailand during this time, we wouldn’t rule Koh Tao out because of the weather alone.

Our Experience Visiting Koh Tao in August

We stayed on Koh Tao for five nights in mid-August, and our experience of the weather was actually better than we expected.

We had afternoon showers on most days, but these were generally short-lived and lasted around an hour before the weather cleared again. This meant that the rain didn’t really disrupt our plans, and we were still able to spend plenty of time exploring the island and enjoying the beaches.

We did have one day where it rained for most of the day, which meant we had to slow down and change our plans. However, having only one particularly wet day during our five-night stay, we didn’t feel that the August weather negatively affected our trip.

If you’re visiting Koh Tao in August, we’d recommend being prepared for some rain but not assuming that you’ll have constant bad weather. Our experience was mostly a mixture of sunshine and short afternoon showers, with just one particularly rainy day.

What Is the Weather Like in Koh Tao in August?

August falls within Koh Tao’s wetter period, so you should expect some possibility of rain during your visit.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll experience constant rainfall throughout your trip.

One of the things we noticed was how quickly the weather could change. You can have sunshine and beautiful conditions before a shower moves through, meaning a rainy forecast doesn’t automatically mean you’ll lose an entire day.

For us, this was exactly what happened during our five nights on the island. We had one full day of rain, but the rest of our stay still gave us plenty of time to enjoy Koh Tao.

If you’re visiting in August, I’d recommend going with a flexible mindset rather than expecting perfect weather every day.

Does It Rain a Lot in Koh Tao in August?

Rain is certainly possible in August, but don’t assume that visiting during the rainy season means your entire holiday will be wet.

Tropical weather can be unpredictable, and rainfall often comes in short, heavy bursts rather than lasting all day.

Of course, you can get unlucky — as we did with one full day of rain — so it’s worth having a few indoor or weather-proof activities in mind.

The good news is that a rainy day doesn’t necessarily mean there’s nothing to do.

You can use it as an opportunity to enjoy a long lunch, explore the restaurants and cafés around Sairee Beach, relax at your accommodation or simply take a slower day.

Is August a Good Time to Visit Koh Tao?

Yes, we think August can be a good time to visit Koh Tao, particularly if you’re happy to accept some unpredictable weather.

The biggest advantage is that you can still experience the island during a period when the weather isn’t necessarily at its most reliable without completely writing off your trip.

If you’re someone who needs guaranteed sunshine every day, August probably isn’t the month I’d choose.

But if you’re travelling around Thailand and Koh Tao is somewhere you really want to visit, I wouldn’t let the possibility of rain put you off.

We certainly don’t regret visiting in August.

What Was Koh Tao Like When We Visited in August?

Our experience of Koh Tao in August was actually really positive.

We stayed for five nights and wanted to use the island as a chance to slow down and relax during our Thailand trip.

We were lucky enough to have plenty of good weather during our stay, although we did have one full day where it rained.

That meant we couldn’t make the most of the beaches that day, but it didn’t feel like a disaster because we’d already had time to enjoy the island.

One thing we’d recommend is not packing your itinerary too tightly if you’re visiting Koh Tao in August.

Having flexibility means you can make the most of the sunny days and simply move your plans around if the weather changes.

Can You Go to the Beach in Koh Tao in August?

Absolutely.

One of the main reasons we enjoyed Koh Tao was its beaches, and visiting in August doesn’t mean you have to forget about them.

We visited and enjoyed several beaches around the island, including:

  • Sairee Beach
  • Freedom Beach
  • Shark Bay
  • Ao Leuk
  • Tanote Bay

Sairee Beach was our favourite area because of the combination of beach, restaurants and atmosphere.

The beaches can look completely different depending on the weather, though, so don’t be surprised if you get a mixture of bright sunshine, cloudy skies and the occasional tropical shower during your trip.

Is Koh Tao Busy in August?

Another thing to consider is that August isn’t necessarily a quiet month on Koh Tao.

While weather can influence visitor numbers, Koh Tao remains a popular destination, particularly with backpackers and travellers moving around the Thai islands.

We found the Sairee Beach area lively and busy, particularly around the main strip.

However, this wasn’t necessarily a problem with the beach itself — for us, the bigger issue was our accommodation.

We stayed on the main party street in Sairee, which meant we experienced a lot of noise at night and sometimes found the area overwhelming.

We actually loved Sairee Beach and the choice of restaurants, and if we returned we’d happily stay in the area again.

We’d just stay a few streets away from the main party strip.

This is something I’d particularly recommend if you’re visiting Koh Tao in August and want a relaxing holiday.

Is Koh Tao Good for a Relaxing Holiday in August?

Yes — and this is actually one of the reasons we enjoyed our trip.

We stayed for five nights specifically because we wanted some time to relax rather than constantly move between destinations.

When the weather was good, we could head to the beach, explore different parts of the island or simply enjoy being outside.

When it rained, we slowed down.

That flexibility worked really well for us.

If you’re planning a trip to Koh Tao in August, I’d recommend leaving some unplanned time in your itinerary rather than booking activities for every single day.

What to Pack for Koh Tao in August

If you’re visiting Koh Tao in August, I’d make sure you’re prepared for both sunshine and rain.

I’d recommend bringing:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing
  • Plenty of sunscreen
  • A lightweight rain jacket
  • Waterproof bag or dry bag
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Swimwear
  • Quick-drying clothes
  • Insect repellent
  • A reusable water bottle

A small waterproof bag is particularly useful if you’re travelling around the island or taking boat trips.

Is August a Good Time for Diving in Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is famous for diving, and August can still be a popular time to learn or dive around the island.

However, sea conditions can vary depending on the weather, so conditions won’t necessarily be perfect every day.

If diving is the main reason you’re visiting, I’d recommend allowing some flexibility in your schedule rather than booking your entire trip around a single dive day.

And if you’re not a diver, don’t worry — we aren’t either, and we still had a great time on Koh Tao.

There are plenty of beaches, viewpoints, restaurants and other things to enjoy above the water.

Our Verdict: Is Koh Tao Worth Visiting in August?

Yes, we would visit Koh Tao in August again.

We spent five nights on the island and only experienced one full day of rain. The rest of the time, we were able to enjoy the beaches, explore the island and make the most of our stay.

Of course, if you’re planning a holiday specifically around guaranteed sunshine, August probably isn’t the best month to choose.

But if you’re already travelling around Thailand during August, we don’t think the possibility of rain should automatically put you off Koh Tao.

For us, the island was still beautiful, relaxing and enjoyable — and a rainy day didn’t change that.

Our biggest tip would be to keep your itinerary flexible and don’t book somewhere directly on the main party street if you’re looking for a good night’s sleep.

Koh Tao in August might not guarantee perfect weather, but we think it’s still well worth visiting.
