Seoul on a Budget: Free and Low-Cost Activities in Seoul
Seoul is often seen as a high-tech, fast-paced city, but it can be surprisingly affordable for travellers. From historic palaces and scenic parks to vibrant markets and cultural experiences, there are plenty of ways to explore South Korea’s capital without spending a fortune. Here are some free and low cost activities we did to keep our costs down while backpacking through South Korea.
Walk Along Cheonggyecheon Stream

The stream flows past some of Seoul’s most famous districts, including Jongno and Dongdaemun, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s busy streets. Walking paths on both sides of the water make it easy to enjoy a leisurely stroll while taking in waterfalls, public art installations, small bridges, and landscaped gardens.
During the day, Cheonggyecheon provides a refreshing place to relax, especially during Seoul’s warmer months. In the evening, the stream is illuminated with lights, creating a particularly scenic atmosphere for a sunset or night-time walk. Throughout the year, seasonal displays, lantern festivals, and cultural events often take place along the route, adding even more reasons to visit.
One of the best things about Cheonggyecheon Stream is its accessibility. You can join the walkway from multiple points throughout central Seoul, making it easy to combine with nearby attractions such as Gwangjang Market, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, and Gyeongbokgung Palace.
