How Many Days in Phi Phi Islands? Our 6-Night Experience

If you’re wondering how many days in Phi Phi Islands you really need, our answer might surprise you. We originally planned to stay for just three nights, but ended up extending our trip to six nights because we loved Phi Phi so much.

From beautiful beaches and turquoise waters to boat trips, snorkelling and incredible sunsets, there was so much we wanted to see and do that we simply didn’t feel ready to leave. While two days is enough to see some of the highlights, having extra time allowed us to slow down and enjoy the island without constantly rushing from one activity to the next.

In this guide, we’re sharing our experience of spending six nights in Phi Phi, how long we’d recommend staying and a realistic itinerary for making the most of your time — whether you have just two days or a little longer.

How Many Days Do You Need in Phi Phi Islands?

So, how many days in Phi Phi Islands do you actually need?

For most travellers, 2–3 days is enough to experience the main highlights, including the beaches, viewpoints, boat trips and sunsets. If you prefer a slower pace, adding a few extra days gives you more time to enjoy the island without packing your itinerary.

We originally planned a shorter visit, but after arriving and falling in love with Phi Phi, we decided to extend our trip. Looking back, having extra time was one of the best decisions we made.

That said, you don’t need nearly a week to enjoy Phi Phi. Two days is enough for the highlights, while 3–4 days gives you a more relaxed experience with plenty of time for exploring and simply enjoying the island.

Is 2 Days Enough in Phi Phi Islands?

Yes — 2 days in Phi Phi Islands is enough to see the main highlights, especially if you’re visiting as part of a wider Thailand itinerary.

With two full days, you can fit in some of Phi Phi’s best experiences, including exploring the island’s beaches, visiting the famous viewpoints, taking a boat trip and watching the sunset. You won’t have time to see absolutely everything, but you can still get a really good feel for the island.

The main thing we’d recommend is not trying to cram too much into each day. Phi Phi is somewhere that’s worth enjoying at a slower pace, with time to swim, relax on the beach and wander around the island between activities.

If you only have a short amount of time, we’d suggest staying at least 2 nights rather than visiting on a day trip. Having the evening and early morning on Phi Phi gives you the chance to experience a quieter side of the island once the day-trippers have left.

If you have the choice, though, we’d personally choose 3–4 nights. This gives you more flexibility and makes it much easier to enjoy Phi Phi without feeling like you’re constantly ticking things off a list.

Our Suggested 2-Day Phi Phi Islands Itinerary

If you only have 2 days in Phi Phi Islands, we’d recommend balancing sightseeing with plenty of time to actually enjoy the island. Here’s how we’d structure your time:

Day 1: Explore Phi Phi Don & Watch the Sunset

Morning: Start with a relaxed breakfast before exploring Phi Phi Don on foot. Wander through the narrow streets around Tonsai Village, browse the shops and grab a coffee or smoothie along the way.

Late morning: Head to one of Phi Phi Don’s beaches for a few hours of swimming and relaxing. This is a good time to slow down before the island gets busier later in the day.

Afternoon: Make your way up to the Phi Phi Viewpoint. The climb is worth it for the famous panoramic views across Phi Phi Don. We’d recommend visiting earlier in the day when you have plenty of time to enjoy the views without rushing.

Evening: Finish your first day by finding a good spot to watch the sunset. Afterwards, head back towards Tonsai for dinner and spend the evening exploring the lively streets.

Day 2: Boat Trip, Maya Bay & Snorkelling

Early morning: Get up early for a boat trip around the Phi Phi Islands. This is the best way to experience some of the scenery that makes Phi Phi so famous, including Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave.

Late morning: Spend some time swimming and snorkelling in the turquoise waters. Depending on your boat trip, you may also visit smaller islands and beaches around the Phi Phi archipelago.

Afternoon: Return to Phi Phi Don and take the rest of the afternoon at a slower pace. Grab lunch, relax on the beach or explore any parts of the island you didn’t get to see on your first day.

Evening: Have one final dinner in Tonsai and enjoy one last evening on the island.

Why We Ended Up Staying 6 Nights in Phi Phi Islands

We originally booked 3 nights in Phi Phi Islands, thinking that would be plenty of time before continuing with our Thailand travels. But once we arrived, we quickly realised we didn’t want to leave just yet.

There was something about Phi Phi that made it easy to settle into island life. Between the beautiful beaches, turquoise water, boat trips, sunsets and the laid-back atmosphere, we found ourselves enjoying simply being there rather than feeling like we needed to constantly move on to the next destination.

So, instead of sticking to our original plan, we extended our stay to 6 nights.

Having those extra days gave us the freedom to take things at a much slower pace. We could spend time at the beach, explore at our own pace and have quieter days in between activities rather than trying to fit everything into a short itinerary.

If you’re deciding how long to stay in Phi Phi Islands, we’d say 2 days is enough for the highlights, but having a few extra days gives you much more freedom to actually enjoy the island.
