Where to Stay in Cologne for Christmas Markets: Best Areas & Hotels
Cologne is my favourite place I’ve visited for Christmas markets, and honestly, they were so magical. From the beautiful lights and festive stalls to the smell of mulled wine filling the streets, the whole city felt like Christmas had come to life.
As with any city break, where you stay can make a big difference to your trip. Being close to the Christmas markets means you can easily walk between them, head back to your hotel when you need a break, and enjoy the atmosphere without worrying about getting around late at night.
In this guide, I’ll take you through the best areas to stay in Cologne for the Christmas markets, along with our suggestions for hotels and tips for choosing the right location for your visit.

Old Town (Altstadt) – Best Area to Stay for Cologne Christmas Markets
If you’re visiting Cologne mainly for the Christmas markets, the Old Town (Altstadt) is one of the best places to stay. This is the area I would look at first when choosing accommodation, especially if it’s your first visit to Cologne.
Staying in the Old Town puts you right in the heart of the festive atmosphere. You’ll be within easy walking distance of several of Cologne’s main Christmas markets, including the famous market outside Cologne Cathedral and the markets around Alter Markt and Heumarkt.
I loved being able to explore the markets in the evening without having to worry about getting public transport back to our hotel. You can wander around, stop for a glühwein, browse the stalls and simply enjoy the atmosphere before walking back to your accommodation.
The Old Town is also a great choice if you want to experience more of Cologne beyond the Christmas markets. You’ll have plenty of restaurants, traditional pubs, shops and attractions nearby, as well as the Rhine and Cologne Cathedral.
The main downside is that accommodation here can be more expensive, particularly on December weekends when the Christmas markets are at their busiest. However, if your main reason for visiting is the markets, I think the convenience of staying centrally is worth considering.
Why Stay in Cologne Old Town?
- Close to several of the main Christmas markets
- Easy to explore the city on foot
- Lots of restaurants, bars and shops nearby
- Close to Cologne Cathedral and the Rhine
- Great atmosphere during the Christmas season
- Ideal for a short Christmas market break
If you want to be right in the middle of the action, the Old Town would be my first area to check when booking your Cologne accommodation.
Best Hotels to Stay in Cologne Old Town
There are plenty of accommodation options in Cologne’s Old Town, from more affordable hotels to luxury stays right in the heart of the city. Here are a few options worth considering for a Christmas market trip.
Budget: KONCEPT HOTEL Zum Kostbaren Blut
Koncept Hotel Zum Kostbaren Blut is a good option if you want to stay right in the Old Town without going for a more expensive hotel. It is located close to Alter Markt, putting you within easy walking distance of the Christmas markets, restaurants and Cologne Cathedral.

Mid-Range: CityClass Hotel Alter Markt
For a more comfortable stay, CityClass Hotel am Dom is another centrally located option. It is just a short walk from Alter Markt and Cologne Cathedral, making it particularly convenient if you want to spend most of your trip exploring the Christmas markets on foot. Booking.com currently lists the hotel with an 8.7 rating from more than 4,000 reviews.

Another mid-range option worth checking is Maritim Hotel Köln, which is located directly at Heumarkt and is particularly handy for the Christmas market in this part of the Old Town.

Luxury: Excelsior Hotel Ernst
If you want to make your Christmas market trip feel extra special, Excelsior Hotel Ernst am Dom is a luxury option directly opposite Cologne Cathedral. It combines a historic setting with an extremely central location, meaning you can step outside and be right beside one of Cologne’s most famous Christmas market locations.
Booking.com currently lists the hotel with an 8.8 rating.

For a Christmas market trip, I would prioritise location over hotel facilities. You’ll probably spend most of your time out exploring the markets anyway, so being able to walk back to your hotel at the end of the evening is a huge advantage.
Cologne Cathedral & Main Station – Best for Convenience
If you want to be as central as possible, staying around Cologne Cathedral and the main train station (Köln Hauptbahnhof) is another great option.
This area is particularly convenient if you’re arriving in Cologne by train, as you can step off the train and be within minutes of your hotel. More importantly for a Christmas market trip, you’ll be right beside Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market, one of the most famous and atmospheric markets in the city.
You can also walk from here into the Old Town and reach the markets at Alter Markt and Heumarkt without needing public transport. This makes it a particularly good choice if you’re only visiting Cologne for a couple of nights and want to make the most of your time.
The area around the station can feel busier and more touristy than some of the quieter parts of the Old Town, but I actually think the convenience makes up for this. You’ll also have plenty of restaurants, shops and transport connections right on your doorstep.
Why Stay Near Cologne Cathedral?
- Right beside Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market
- Very convenient if arriving by train
- Walking distance to the Old Town
- Easy access to several Christmas markets
- Lots of restaurants and shops nearby
- Great option for a short city break
One thing to keep in mind is that hotels in this area can become expensive during the Christmas market season, particularly at weekends. If you find the prices around the Cathedral are too high, I’d recommend looking slightly further into the Old Town rather than moving too far away.

Budget: Hotel Domspitzen
Hotel Domspitzen is a popular option if you want to stay close to the Cathedral without paying luxury-hotel prices. It’s only a short walk from Köln Hauptbahnhof and the Cathedral, making it a practical base for exploring the Christmas markets.

Neumarkt – Best for Christmas Markets and Shopping
Another area to consider when deciding where to stay in Cologne for the Christmas markets is Neumarkt. Located in the city centre, Neumarkt is particularly convenient if you want to combine Christmas markets with plenty of shopping during your trip.
The famous Heavenue Christmas Market takes place around Neumarkt, giving the area a lovely festive atmosphere during December. You’ll also be close to Schildergasse and Hohe Straße, two of Cologne’s main shopping streets, so it’s a good choice if you want to pick up some Christmas gifts or spend some time browsing the shops.
Although Neumarkt isn’t directly in the Old Town, you can easily walk to the Cathedral and other central Christmas markets. Alternatively, the area has excellent public transport connections if you don’t fancy walking.
I’d particularly consider Neumarkt if accommodation in the Old Town is looking expensive. You’re still staying centrally, but you have a slightly different atmosphere and plenty of facilities close by.
Why Stay in Neumarkt?
- Home to the Heavenue Christmas Market
- Close to Cologne’s main shopping streets
- Easy to walk to the Old Town
- Excellent public transport connections
- Lots of restaurants and cafés nearby
- Good alternative if Old Town hotels are expensive

Deutz – Best for a Quieter Stay Close to the City Centre
If accommodation in the centre of Cologne is looking too expensive, Deutz is another area worth considering. Located on the opposite side of the Rhine, Deutz gives you a quieter base while still being within easy reach of the Christmas markets.
One of the biggest advantages is the location. You can walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge towards Cologne Cathedral and the Old Town, giving you some lovely views of the Rhine and Cathedral along the way.
Deutz is also well connected by public transport, so you don’t have to rely solely on walking. This can be particularly useful if you’re visiting during the colder December weather and don’t want to spend all day walking between the different markets.
I wouldn’t choose Deutz if being right in the middle of the Christmas market atmosphere is your main priority. However, if you find a good hotel deal here, it can be a practical alternative to staying in the Old Town.
Why Stay in Deutz?
- Often offers more affordable accommodation than the Old Town
- Across the Rhine from Cologne Cathedral
- Walking distance to the city centre
- Great views of the Rhine and Cathedral
- Good public transport connections
- Quieter atmosphere than the busiest parts of the Old Town

Budget: B&B HOTEL Köln-Messe
B&B HOTEL Köln-Messe is a practical budget option in Deutz. It’s a little further from the main Christmas markets, but public transport makes reaching the city centre straightforward.

For a more luxurious stay, the Hyatt Regency Köln sits right on the Rhine and has excellent views towards Cologne Cathedral. You’re also close to the Hohenzollern Bridge, so walking into the Old Town is easy.

For me, Deutz would be more of a backup option if central Cologne accommodation is expensive or booked up. You’re still close enough to enjoy the Christmas markets, but staying in the Old Town means you can step straight outside into the festive atmosphere.
Frequently Asked Questions About Where to Stay in Cologne for Christmas Markets
What is the best area to stay in Cologne for the Christmas markets?
For a first visit, I’d look at Cologne’s Old Town (Altstadt) or the area around Cologne Cathedral. These locations put you within easy walking distance of several of the main Christmas markets, as well as restaurants, bars and other attractions.
Is it better to stay near Cologne Cathedral or in the Old Town?
Both are excellent choices. Staying near the Cathedral is particularly convenient for the Cathedral Christmas Market and the main train station, while the wider Old Town gives you easy access to Alter Markt, Heumarkt and plenty of restaurants and bars.
How many days do you need in Cologne for the Christmas markets?
I’d recommend 2–3 days for a Christmas market trip to Cologne. This gives you enough time to visit several different markets without having to rush, while also leaving time to explore the city itself.
Can you walk between the Christmas markets in Cologne?
Yes. Many of the main Christmas markets are within walking distance of each other, particularly those around the Cathedral, Old Town, Alter Markt and Heumarkt. This is one of the reasons I recommend staying centrally.
Is Cologne expensive during the Christmas markets?
Accommodation can be noticeably more expensive during December, particularly on weekends when the Christmas markets are busy. Booking early and considering areas such as Neumarkt or Deutz can give you more options if central hotels are outside your budget.
Is Cologne Old Town a good place to stay for Christmas markets?
Yes. The Old Town is one of the most convenient areas because you can walk to several Christmas markets, restaurants and attractions. It also means you can enjoy the festive atmosphere without relying on public transport.
Where is the cheapest area to stay in Cologne for the Christmas markets?

If the main purpose of your trip is the Christmas markets, staying centrally is particularly convenient. You’ll be able to walk between many of the markets and easily return to your hotel at the end of the evening.
How far in advance should you book a hotel in Cologne for Christmas markets?
I’d recommend booking as early as you can, especially if you want to visit on a December weekend. Central hotels can become expensive or sell out as the Christmas season gets closer, so booking early gives you more choice.
