Where to Stay in Kanchanaburi: Best Areas & Hotels

Kanchanaburi was one of our favourite stops during our wider trip around Thailand, and we absolutely loved our time here. From the famous River Kwai and historic landmarks to peaceful riverside settings and beautiful surrounding nature, there’s so much to explore.

After spending some time in Kanchanaburi ourselves, we quickly realised that where you stay can make a big difference to your experience. The area has everything from lively town-centre hotels to peaceful riverside resorts and unique floating stays, so choosing the right base can feel a little overwhelming.

In this guide, we’ll take you through where to stay in Kanchanaburi, including the best areas to base yourself, what each area is like, and the types of accommodation you can expect to find. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or spending a few days exploring the region, this should help you choose the perfect place for your trip.

Best Areas to Stay in Kanchanaburi

Where you stay in Kanchanaburi will largely depend on the type of trip you’re planning. The town itself is a practical base for sightseeing, while heading further along the River Kwai gives you access to quieter surroundings and some of the region’s more unusual accommodation.

Here are the main areas to consider.

Kanchanaburi Town

Best for: first-time visitors, restaurants and budget accommodation

Kanchanaburi Town is the easiest option if you want to be close to restaurants, cafés, shops and the town’s main attractions. There’s a good mix of guesthouses, hostels and hotels, making it particularly appealing if you’re travelling on a budget.

It’s also a practical choice if you’re planning to spend most of your days out exploring and simply want somewhere central to return to in the evening.

River Kwai

Best for: riverside hotels and a more tranquil stay

Staying along the River Kwai offers a very different experience from being in town. Many of the properties here are designed around the river, with terraces, pools and rooms that make the most of the setting.

This is a good option if you’re looking for somewhere that feels like a destination in itself, rather than just a convenient place to stay.

We stayed close to the famous Bridge over the River Kwai and found this to be a really good area to base ourselves. We were within easy reach of the bridge and had plenty of accommodation options nearby, while still being close enough to explore other parts of Kanchanaburi.

Further along the river, we noticed there seemed to be more restaurants, bars and activity, although this may have been partly down to the fact that we visited during the low season. If you want a livelier atmosphere, it may be worth looking further along the river rather than staying directly beside the bridge.

Riverside & Floating Resorts

Best for: a unique Kanchanaburi experience

For something a little more memorable, look at the floating resorts dotted along the River Kwai. Staying directly on the water is one of the more unusual accommodation experiences you can have in the area.

These properties tend to be more secluded, with fewer facilities and restaurants immediately outside your accommodation. That’s part of the appeal, but it’s worth considering if you prefer having everything within easy reach.

Sai Yok

Best for: nature and exploring further afield

Further west of Kanchanaburi Town, Sai Yok puts you closer to some of the province’s natural attractions. The area is surrounded by forest and is known for its waterfalls, caves and stretches of the River Kwai.

It’s worth considering if you have a few extra days and want to explore beyond Kanchanaburi Town, particularly if you enjoy spending time outdoors.

Which Area Should You Stay In?

For a short first visit, Kanchanaburi Town is a straightforward base, particularly if you want restaurants and attractions nearby. If the setting of your accommodation is more important, look towards the River Kwai or one of the area’s floating resorts.

And if you’re planning a longer stay and want to explore more of the province, Sai Yok gives you a chance to experience a quieter, more nature-focused side of Kanchanaburi.
