We decided to make it an overnight stop rather than simply visiting as a day trip. Located between Osaka and Hiroshima, Himeji was a convenient stop on our route and gave us the chance to explore more than just its famous castle.
While Himeji Castle was the main reason we wanted to visit, staying overnight allowed us to take our time exploring the city and surrounding attractions without feeling rushed. The fastest option is the Shinkansen, which takes approximately 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka Station. Alternatively, the JR Special Rapid Service takes around one hour and is often a more affordable option.

The castle is incredibly impressive from the outside, but we also recommend heading inside to explore its many floors and learn more about its history. As you make your way through the castle, you can see the original wooden interiors, defensive features and impressive views over Himeji from the upper floors.
Himeji Castle was easily one of the highlights of our time in the city. Its unique appearance and fascinating history make it unlike many of the other attractions we visited during our time in Japan.
Explore Koko-en Garden
Located right beside Himeji Castle, Koko-en Garden is the perfect place to visit alongside the castle. This beautiful traditional Japanese garden is made up of several different landscaped gardens, each with its own unique design.
As you wander through the gardens, you will find peaceful ponds, traditional architecture, carefully maintained plants and beautiful seasonal scenery. It offers a much quieter experience compared to the busy castle and is a lovely place to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.
We recommend allowing some extra time to explore Koko-en Garden when visiting Himeji Castle, as the two attractions are conveniently located next to each other.

One of our favourite things to do when travelling is simply wandering around and getting a feel for a new city. While Himeji’s main attractions are undoubtedly the biggest draw, it is worth taking some time to explore the area around the station and castle.
The main street leading from Himeji Station towards the castle is lined with shops, restaurants and cafés. It is a great place to stop for food, pick up a few souvenirs or simply enjoy the atmosphere of the city.
We found that staying overnight gave us more time to explore Himeji at a relaxed pace, rather than rushing back to another city after visiting the castle.
Try Himeji’s Local Food

However, we decided to include one night in Himeji as part of our Japan itinerary, and we really enjoyed having the extra time to explore at a more relaxed pace. Staying overnight meant we did not have to rush around the main attractions or worry about catching a train back to another city.
